Getting to Campo San Maurizio
How to find Palazzo Zaguri and the Museo della Musica on Campo San Maurizio in San Marco, by water or on foot, and what to know at the door.
Book the Four Seasons concert ↗Quick answer
Campo San Maurizio is a square in Venice’s San Marco district, between the Accademia end of the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco. Palazzo Zaguri, where the concert is held, closes its east side, and the Museo della Musica is in the church on the same square, a few steps away.
Where the square is
Wikipedia’s article on Palazzo Zaguri places it on Campo San Maurizio in the San Marco district, enclosing the square’s eastern side. The concert’s address is San Marco 2668, and the museum in the church is San Marco 2603, both on the same Campo.
Arriving by water
The Accademia vaporetto stop stands near the wooden Ponte dell’Accademia, one of only four bridges to span the Grand Canal. Wikipedia says the bridge links the Dorsoduro and San Marco districts, and that the Gallerie dell’Accademia are housed in the former Scuola della Carità nearby. Vaporetti are Venice’s public water buses, run by ACTV.
Arriving on foot
The Rialto Bridge is about ten minutes’ walk from the concert, and Piazza San Marco lies the other way. The lanes between are narrow, and phone maps can lose signal between buildings. Leave a margin in the day, because one visitor was late after dinner and another did not find the museum before it closed. The museum is in the former church of San Maurizio, on the same square.
Walking from the Rialto Bridge
Wikipedia says the Rialto Bridge was finished in 1591 after work began in 1588, that Antonio da Ponte designed its single stone arch, and that it is the oldest of the four bridges across the Grand Canal. It joins the San Marco and San Polo districts, with rows of shops on covered ramps. Crossing it on the way to the concert makes a grand start, though the lanes beyond are where a phone map earns its keep.
The Accademia bridge and the galleries
Wikipedia’s article on the Ponte dell’Accademia says the original steel structure, designed by Alfred Neville, opened on 20 November 1854 and was later replaced by a wooden bridge designed by Eugenio Miozzi, which opened in 1933. It is named for the Accademia di Belle Arti, which occupied the Scuola della Carità from 1807 to 2004, and the Gallerie dell’Accademia are still housed there. The bridge is the easiest landmark to steer by from the Dorsoduro side.
At the door
Suitcases and large bags cannot come in, and neither can food, drink, smoking or pets, though assistance dogs are welcome. Flash and audio recording are off limits too. Step-free access is marked for the concert on the booking page, so look there first if you have more specific needs.
What is nearby
The opera house La Fenice is in the same district, facing Campo San Fantin. Wikipedia says Selva, who designed the original La Fenice, rebuilt San Maurizio in 1806. The Accademia galleries, beside the wooden bridge, are across the Grand Canal.
Dates and sell-outs
Concert dates come from the booking calendar and museum hours from the museum itself, so build your day from those two sources. Seats are tagged as likely to sell out, which makes an early booking wise in busy months.
